Peter DeMott was brilliant, kind, funny, a loving family man, a loyal friend.
He was stalwart in his commitment to thwarting war and nuclear weapons. He was devoted to living out in real, concrete ways the non-violent love taught by Jesus, and to building what he called the “kindom of God,” a world in which all would live as sisters and brothers. Like myriad others in Ithaca and beyond, I consider myself blessed to have counted him among my friends.
If you also were so blessed, if Peter ever painted your house or moved your piano, made you a homemade birthday card or inspired you by his unwavering dedication to peace and justice, I invite you to honor his memory on June 19. Join the Ithaca Catholic Worker at the seventh annual Peter DeMott Peace Trot, a 5K run/1-mile walk to raise funds for the local Catholic Worker house. You can register to run (or walk or stroll) or simply make a donation at peterdemottpeacetrot.org.
Your support will help the Catholic Worker to continue the tradition of befriending and assisting low income neighbors, resisting militarism and racism, and cultivating community, just as Peter did.
