Presence has it's mysteries

from Dan Finlay...
Did you know that the distance from Jerusalem to Emmaus is 10.4 kilometers? That is just a little more than two Peace Trots! And since the Risen Christ joined the two disciples in the middle of their journey (Luke 24:13-35), maybe he did a 5K with them before they broke bread. You never know who is walking with you side by side. That is especially true in a virtual trot. You might be walking your 5K in Ithaca New York at 7 AM listening to the bird songs in Cass Park and halfway across the world someone is matching you step by step as the sun sets. Presence has its' mysteries.

Planning the run-on-your-own Trot has been an adventure! This is new for all of us on the planning committee and we are working hard to safely hold the event this year in a very different format. I've been running or helping out with the Peace Trot for several years now, and it truly is a wonderful community event and a great group of people committed to peace and social justice. We are a bit disappointed we won't be able to gather this year for that very special community feel, but we hope that through online reflections and social media posts we will have some feeling of togetherness in this strange time. Be well, trot safely, and try to be joyful though you have considered all the facts.

Ahmaud Arbery, a fit athlete, was out jogging near his home on a Sunday afternoon in Brunswick, Georgia on February 23, 2020, when two white supremacists saw him, got their guns, got in a truck, chased him down, pulled up next to him, shot him at least two times, and killed him right there on the spot. Ahmaud was unarmed, broke no laws, and did nothing wrong. He was only 25 years old when he died.

The Ithaca Catholic Worker community is outraged at Ahmaud's killing and we mourn his death, sending our heartfelt condolences to his family and community. Many of us have dedicated a run/walk/jog/trot to Ahmaud and we are asking you to join us. Click here -
